Clippers Roll, 18-5, In Finals Opener

Jerad Head drove in six runs with three of Columbus' 20 hits as the host Clippers clobbered the Durham Bulls 18-5. Columbus leads the best-of-five Governor's Cup series for the championship of the Triple-A International League. Right-hander Zach McAllister will start Game 2 on Wednesday night for the Clippers in their final game of the season at Huntington Park before the series shifts to Durham.

Every Clippers starter had at least two hits and one run.

Left-hander David Huff got all the offense he needed when Columbus took a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Huff gave up only four hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out five without a walk.

Aaron Laffey was tagged for four runs on four hits in the eighth before Jess Todd yielded two hits but no runs in the ninth.

Columbus was without second baseman Drew Sutton, called up to the Cleveland Indians. Jason Kipnis was promoted from Double-A Akron to take his place.

Here's what the starting nine did for Columbus:
RF Jose Constanza, 2-for-6, run, RBI, stolen base
CF Ezequiel Carrera, 2-for-6, triple, run, RBI.
2B Cord Phelps, 2-for-4, walk, RBI, two runs
1B Wes Hodges, 2-for-3, homer, two runs, three RBI
DH Jason Kipnis, 2-for-4, walk, three runs
3N Jared Goedert, 3-for-5, double, homer, three runs, three RBI.
LF Jerad Head, 3-for-5, homer, two runs, six RBI
C Luke Carlin, 2-for-4, walk, homer, two runs, two RBI
SS Josh Rodriguez, 2-for-4, walk, two doubles, run, RBI

The Clippers sent 12 men to the plate in a seven-run fifth that put them ahead 12-1.
