Lake County defeated visiting Clinton 7-3 and leads the best-of-five Midwest League Finals, two games to one. Brett Brach threw strikes as Jason Smith, Greg Folgia and Tyler Holt gave him the lead by hitting home runs. The Captains scored twice in each of the first two innings as they rebounded from a heartbreaking 18-inning loss in Game 2 in Iowa. Lake County can win it tonight (6:30) at home.

Brach had good command of a decent fastball and curve to strike out nine without a walk over 6 2-3 sharp innings. The right-hander gave up seven hits and one run.

Mike Rayl, Jeremy Johnson and Preston Guilmet finished up as the Captains regained control of the series with an impressive triumph.

Brach worked both corners with his fastball, getting ahead in the count and forcing Lumberkings batters to swing at his pitch -- or often get caught looking at a called third strike on the outside corner.

Holt, hitting second in manager Ted Kubiak's suddenly recharged batting order, sparked the offense. The June draft pick out of Florida State went 2-for-2 with two walks, a solo homer, two RBI, three runs and a stolen base.

No. 7 and 8 hitters Smit and Folgia hit consecutive solo homers into the left-field bleachers in the second inning to give the Captains a 4-0 lead.

The Captains can claim the championship in their first season in the Class A Midwest League with a win tonight at Classic Ballpark. Lake County moved from the South Atlantic League this season, won a first-half division title, but barely played above .500 in the second half. Then the Captains won consecutive playoff series to advance to the title round.

If a Game 5 is needed, the Captains would host it Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Recommended Stories
