<FONT face=Tahoma size=2>Developments involving the Indians and a few of their No. 1 draft picks proved very interesting over the past week.<br><br> First, the signing of 2004 No. 1 choice Jeremy Sowers came as no surprise whatsoever.<br><br> Another high 2004 draft pick told me off the record recently that, from everything he had heard -- and he had heard quite a bit -- there was no way Sowers, a bright young man, would not sign a contract with a guaranteed $2 million-plus bonus.<br>

There were a few solid reasons for that opinion. First off, if Sowers went back to school for his senior season at Vanderbilt before signing, he would have given up any bargaining power at the negotiating table that he enjoyed this year as a junior. And almost without exception, a high first-round draft pick selected after his junior year in college fails to improve his draft status or financial... Recommended Stories
