Lefty Traber Goes To Red Sox On Waivers

Billy Traber

Left-hander Billy Traber was claimed off outright waivers from the Indians by the Boston Red Sox on Nov. 10.

Traber, 25, spent all of 2004 on the 60-day disabled list after having reconstructive surgery on his left elbow Sept. 29, 2003.

His departure leaves only outfielder Matt Lawton with the same team among players involved in the blockbuster trade between Cleveland and the New York Mets on Dec. 11, 2001.
The Indians received Lawton, Traber, outfielder Alex Escobar, right-handed reliever Jerrod Riggan and infielder Earl Snyder in return for second baseman Roberto Alomar, left-hander Mike Bacsik and minor-league first baseman Danny Peoples.

"Exposing Billy Traber to other teams was a difficult decision for us because of our universal respect for Billy as a person and the professional manner in which he has handled himself during his rehab from elbow surgery," said Indians general manager Mark Shapiro.

"This is the first of many difficult and painful decisions for us as we continue to manage our off-season 40-man roster.

We will continue to pull for Billy as he continues his recovery from injury."

The highlight of Traber's career came July 8, 2003, when he pitched a one-hit shutout at Jacobs Field over the New York Yankees, striking out five without issuing a walk.

He experienced soreness in his elbow shortly thereafter and did not pitch after Sept. 16, 2003, having the Tommy John Surgery two weeks later.
