Shortstop Peralta Signs For 2006

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta. coming off a fine first full season in 2005, signed a one-year contract with the Indians today. Terms were not disclosed.

Peralta, 23, hit .292 (147-for-504) in 2005 with 35 doubles, four triples, 24 homers and 78 RBI in 141 games.

He set a team single-season record for homers by a shortstop, breaking the mark of 23 set by Woodie Held in 1961.

Peralta's .521 slugging percetange ranked second among American League shortstops and was also the second highest mark in franchise history behind Lou Boudreau's 1948 .534 -- the year the Hall of Famer won the Most Valuable Player Award.

SPRING NOTES: Pitchers and catchers will take physicals tomorrow and will embark on their first official workout Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

These eight position players arrived early in camp and were working out on their own: br>
1B Michael Aubrey, OF Jason Dubois, 1B-C Ryan Garko, OF Jason Michaels, 1B-OF Ryan Mulhern, OF Brad Snyder, INF Andy Tracy and INF Ramon Vazquez.

Position players are not required to report until Tuesday.

*** The Indians and Cypress Gardens Adventure Park will hold a Grand Slam BBQ on Friday, March 3 from 4:30 t0 10 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Winter Haven Youth Fund.
