Sowers Struggles, Loses To Orioles

Jhonny Peralta bobbles a ball for an error.

A young left-hander mixed up his pitches, kept hitters off balance and cruised to a 7-4 win at Jacobs Field on Saturday night. Too bad for Indians fans that it wasn't Cleveland rookie Jeremy Sowers, but Baltimore's Erik Bedard. Down on the farm, the news was mixed, too. But for downright wild, check out the eighth inning in Gulf Coast League action.

The Indians simply didn't capitalize on opportunities, leaving two runners on base in the second, third, sixth, seventh and ninth innings.

Kelly Shoppach (.294) went 3-for-4 and hit his first career homer in the third inning. Aaron Boone (.254) had an RBI single and scored on a double by Franklin Gutierrez (.258), who then came home on a single by Shoppach in a three-run eighth.

Sowers (1-2, 7.47 ERA) gave up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings, walking three without getting a strikeout.

"What I've learned already is that there is a fine line between pitching good and pitching bad," said Sowers, who had been 9-1 with a 1.39 ERA at Buffalo. "This is a humbling game.

"I'll think about it and probably lose a little sleep, hopefully not too much. I'll have to make some adjustments and get better. I tried to be too fine."

Victor Martinez (.317) went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and Ron Belliard (.292) went 1-for-5 and has hit safely in 13 games in a row.

Bedard (10-6) won his fifth straight start. He opened the season 4-0, then lost six of seven, but has a 1.29 ERA and 5-0 record since June 16.

Class AAA Buffalo (46-44) lost to visiting Pawtucket, 8-2, though outfielder Ben Francisco (.281) went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. Andy Marte (.271) got two of Buffalo's other four hits and an RBI. Jeremy Guthrie (4-2, 3.07 ERA) was rocked for 12 hits and six runs over 6 2/3 innings as his ERA rose nearly half a point from 2.52. Mike Adams, acquired Friday from the New York Mets, retired the only two batters he faced.

Class AA Akron (54-33) drubbed visiting Reading, 15-6. Brad Snyder (.264) went 2-for-5 with five RBI, while Ryan Mulhern (.265), Shaun Larkin (.271) and Nate Panther (.208) each had three hits. Pat Osborn (.237), Wyatt Toregas (.261) and Ivan Ochoa (.240) all had two RBI and Ryan Goleski (.284) hit a solo homer, his seventh at Akron and 17th of the season overall. Starter Dan Denham (4.85 ERA) walked six and allowed five hits and three runs over three innings. Bubbie Buzachero (6-3, 2.76 ERA) got the win, though he walked five and gave up three runs over three innings. Travis Foley (3.38 ERA) pitched two scoreless innings and Juan Lara (2.32 ERA) worked a scoreless ninth.

Class A Kinston (9-7) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win at home over Winston-Salem, 5-3. Matt Whitney (.195) hit a two-run single to put Kinston ahead and another run later scored on a groundout. Rodney Choy Foo (.323) went 2-for-3 with two runs and Javier Herrera (.375) was 2-for-2 with two walks, one run and two RBI. Ryan Knippschild (4.30 ERA) pitched two perfect innings for the win and T.J. Burton (5.35 ERA) worked a perfect 10th for his 14th save. Starter Joe Ness (2.67 ERA) yielded three runs (one earned) over six innings, walking three and striking out six.

Class A Lake County (9-8) scored twice in the 10th inning to win at Delmarva, 3-1. John Drennen (.316) went 2-for-5 and hit a bases-loaded single to snap the tie. Another run scored on a groundout by Mike Conroy (.248) who went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Matt Loberg (3-3, 4.76 ERA) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Matt Davis (3.35 ERA) walked two and gave up a hit in the bottom of the 10th, but didn't allow a run and got his 18th save. Starter Albert Vargas (4.23 ERA) fanned five over five scoreless innings and Cody Bunkelman (3.15 ERA) allowed one run over two innings.

Class A Mahoning Valley (11-8) defeated visiting Aberdeen, 11-5 as Australian Josh Roberts (.167) drove in seven runs with his first homer, a grand slam, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly. Evandy DeLeon (.188) had two RBI, while shortstop Josh Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two runs in his first pro game. Dan Miltenberger (2-0, 5.25 ERA) got the win, though he allowed two runs over 2 2/3 innings. Starter Josh Tomlin (1.80 ERA) struck out six over five innings, allowing four hits, two walks and three runs (one earned). Hart Hering fanned two over the final 1 1/3 innings.

Rookie League Burlington (9-9) got only four hits and fell to visiting Johnson City, 9-2. Erik Stiller (1-2, 7.79) had his ERA skyrocket from 5.68 as he allowed seven runs over 4 2/3 innings. Osiris Perez (1.50 ERA) gave up two more runs over 1 1/3 innings before Brady Halverson (3.00 ERA) worked two scoreless innings and Brett Andrade (9.00 ERA) pitched a perfect ninth.

GCL Indians (9-7) broke open a scoreless game with a 10-run eighth inning and won at the GCL Tigers, 10-1. The Indians had only two singles until sending 15 men to bat in the eighth in one of the wildest innings in any league at any time. It included one error, one passed ball, five wild pitches, four walks, four singles, one double, a bases-loaded triple by Lucas Montero and a three-run homer by Collin Martin, his second of the season. Robert Alcombrack (.125), Ramon Hernandez (.260), Montero (.234) and Martin (.237) all had two hits. Jeanmar Gomez (2-0, 0.43 ERA) gave up two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings, striking out six. Julio Bolivar (2.13 ERA) yielded a run over the final two innings.
