Westbrook Wins With Tenacity, 4-0

Jake Westbrook ... a winning performance.

For the second straight game, Jake Westbrook was the veritable definition of dogged determination. Once again, he didn't let a few too many hits rattle him as he scattered nine singles in a 4-0 Indians victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Meanwhile down on the farm, results were mixed for Cleveland affiliates.

Westbrook (9-7, 4.18 ERA) pitched his second shutout of the season -- though it looked early on as if the right-hander might not last past the third or fourth inning.

He gave up three hits in the first, but helped his cause by picking off a runner between first and second. He yielded two hits to open the second, but got the first of three double plays to help end that threat. The Angels got two more hits and left two more stranded in the third.

"I thought for a second that I was going for the 15-hit record again," he joked with reporters afterwards.

In his previous start, Westbrook allowed 15 hits in a win at Boston to become the first major-leaguer since 1988 to yield that many hits in a game and still win.

Victor Martinez (.314) had three hits and run while Shin-Soo Choo (.310) had three hits, a run and an RBI to lead the Indians' offense.

Class AAA Buffalo (61-56) was not scheduled.

Class AA Akron (71-45) gave up six runs in the bottom of the eighth and lost at New Hampshire, 10-9. Brad Snyder (.259) drove in two runs, scored two, and hit a solo homer, his 11th. Brian Barton (.406) went 2-for-4 with two runs and his 11th stolen base in 19 games for the Aeros and 37th of the season overall. Trevor Crowe (.340), Shaun Larkin (.266) and Wyatt Toregas (.248) also had two hits apiece. Jensen Lewis (3.00 ERA), just promoted from Kinston, struck out eight, but allowed four runs over the first five innings. Bubbie Buzachero (3.22) gave up four runs and got only two outs and Jim Ed Warden (3-2, 3.33) lost it by giving up two more runs before getting the final out in the eighth.

Class A Kinston (24-20, 47-23) won the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, 5-4, at Myrtle Beach. Rain halted play after six innings and postponed the second game. Chuck Lofgren (15-5, 2.35 ERA) allowed four runs and six hits over six innings, walking one and striking out two. Three of the hits and three of the runs came in the bottom of the sixth. All of Kinston's runs came on three homers. Brandon Pinckney (.274) and Stephen Head (.222) hit two-run shots, their fourth and 11th respectively. Jordan Brown (.282), hit a solo shot, his 12th.

Class A Lake County (25-19, 29-41) lost at Augusta, 5-4. Mike Butia (.314) went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Max Ramirez (.294), Fernando Pacheco (.224), P.J. Hiser (.266) and Matt Fornasiere (.255) all had one RBI. Starter Jim Deters (3.43 ERA) allowed three runs over six innings. Jason Schutt (1-2, 3.32) gave up two runs (one earned) over the final two innings and got his second blown save and second loss.

Class A Mahoning Valley (27-21) won at Jamestown, 8-5. Evandy DeLeon (.234) went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI; Josh Rodriguez (.294), Dustin Realini (.239), and Cirilo Cumberbatch (.202) all had two hits, one run and one RBI. Josh Tomlin (5-1, 2.25 ERA) allowed three runs over five innings and got the win. Derrick Loop (3.90) yielded one run over four innings and earned his first save.

Rookie League Burlington (25-23) made five errors, gave up 15 hits and was routed at home by Greenville, 14-1. Corteze Armstrong (.259) went 3-for-4 while Jansy Infante (.302) and Alfred Ard (.206) each had two hits for Burlington. Starter Rick Fairchild (3-3, 5.26 ERA) allowed eight runs (six earned) over 1 1/3 innings.

GCL Indians (18-22) was not scheduled.
