Tribe's Blake Is AL Player Of The Week

Casey Blake is the American League's Player of the Week. Blake batted .348 (8-for-23) with a 1.087 slugging percentage and .483 on-base percentage for the period ending Sunday. Overall, he scored eight runs, had three doubles, a triple, four home runs, eight RBI, six walks and 25 total bases to edge 2006 AL MVP Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins and Magglio Ordoñez of the Detroit Tigers.

Blake has settled in as the Indians' third baseman and No. 2 hitter in the lineup.

"I am very happy with what Casey is doing in the two hole," manager Eric Wedge said in the midst of Blake's binge last week. "He's a right-hander between two lefties (Grady Sizemore and Travis Hafner) and he sees a lot of pitches."

Morneau hit .400, slugged .920, had four homers and topped the nominees with 13 RBI. Ordoñez – who leads the AL with 48 RBI, is second with a .357 batting average and third with 12 homers – hit .435 and slugged .957 with six extra-base hits and nine RBI.

Oakland's Nick Swisher (.435, three homers, 11 RBI) was the other position player given consideration for the award. Nominated among pitchers were the Angels' John Lackey (2-0, 2.08 ERA), Mariners' Jarrod Washburn (2-0, 2.70) and Indians closer Joe Borowski (4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, four saves).

Left-hander Rafael Perez has been called up from Triple-A Buffalo and third baseman Andy Marte optioned to the Bisons. Perez has gone 3-3 with a 3.66 ERA in eight games, including seven starts, for Buffalo. In 46 2/3 innings, he allowed 53 hits and 11 walks, striking out 31. games/7 starts (46.2IP, 53H, 19ER, 11BB, 31K). He was with the Indians from May 3-6 and pitched three innings of scoreless relief on May 5 in Baltimore, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out three.

Marte has appeared in 16 games with the Indians, hitting .180 (9-for-50). He spent most of early May with the Bisons on an injury rehab assignment, recovering from a strained left hamstring. Recommended Stories
