![]() Matt Brown, 13th-round pick
|
The Indians began the second day of drafting the same way they started their first. When picking resumed Friday in the sixth round, they selected first baseman Bo Greenwell, son of former Boston Red Sox star Mike Greenwell. He joins Cleveland's No. 1 pick Beau Mills, son of Boston bench coach Brad Mills. Like current Tribe star Grady Sizemore, the young Greenwell was a quarterback in high school. | |||

In the 44th round, the Tribe selected Ryan Royster, whose uncle Jerry was a long-time player, coach and manager in the majors. In the eighth round, the Indians selected outfielder-shortstop Mark Thompson, who was Mills' teammate at Lewis-Clark State. The Tribe went to manager Eric Wedge's alma mater, Wichita State, for its 13th-round pick, Matt Brown, a hard-hitting outfielder. Greenwell has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at the University of Miami, but has told reporters he would like to begin his pro career now. That's the same career path his dad took 25 years ago. Mike Greenwell was headed to Miami, but drafted in the third round in 1982 by the Red Sox. He signed with Boston and played 12 seasons (1985-96) with the Red Sox, batting .303 with 130 homers, 726 RBIs and 80 stolen bases in 1,269 games. Dad is serving as his son's agent. Before the draft, the younger Greenwell told reporters in Florida that if he was drafted in the first three rounds, he would very much consider turning pro. The Indians believe they can sign him after talking with the recent high school graduate. According to a report from Florida by Dan Deluca in The News Press in which he spoke with Greenwell, the young player said it will take more money than usually given a sixth-round choice to get him to sign. "They told me they're going to go outside the slot for me," Greenwell told Deluca. "They know I'm not signing for sixth-round money. I don't know how far they're willing to go yet." A year ago, high school players picked in the sixth round got an average signing bonus of $151,000. The Indians, without a second or third round pick this year, figure to have the dollars normally slotted for those picks to spread around for some other selections. "They called me Thursday night and told me to be patient," Greenwell told Deluca. "They said they had a couple of other guys they wanted to take in the fourth and fifth round, but that I was their guy in the sixth." Last fall, Greenwell threw for 842 yards and 10 touchdowns during the regular season to lead Riverdale High School to the Florida football playoffs. This spring, he batted .487 with 19 RBI and 17 stolen bases. Brown is still putting up numbers at Wichita State, which is in the NCAA Super Regional Tournament. The junior admitted his attention was divided in recent days, thinking about the draft. "It's been a lot of pressure on my shoulders," Brown told Paul Suellentrop of The Wichita Eagle. "Today, I feel 100 pounds lighter. It's been tough and stressful." In 71 games entering today's tournament game against California-Irvine, Brown hit .312 (86-for-276) with eight homers, 61 RBI and 18 stolen bases. Also in the Super Regionals is lefty reliever Cole St. Clair of Rice. He went 4-0 with an 0.69 earned run average and three saves in 13 appearances with Team USA last summer, but missed the first two months of the 2007 college season with a strained shoulder. In 13 outings for the Owls, he has seven saves and a 2.37 ERA as a junior this year. In his most recent outing, he worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings to save a 6-3 win over Houston last Saturday in a tournament game. As a sophomore in 2006, he was 6-2 with 11 saves and 1.82 ERA when he also saw action as a starter. He started and pitched five innings, allowing one run, in a College World Series game against Miami. A week before that, he worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in a tournament game against Oklahoma. His teammate is Adam Zornes, a catcher selected in the 24th round by Cleveland. Rice is currently playing Texas A&M, where the Indians' No. 12 pick, Gary Campfield, has been a reliable reliever this season. He went 3-0 with three saves and 2.67 ERA in 20 appearances, all out of the bullpen. Campfield was drafted by the Yankees in the 25th round in 2004 while he was at Navarro Junior College. Even the club's last pick in the 50th round, Doug Pickens, is still in action. He has played the unlikely combination of catcher, second base and right field this year for Michigan, which is facing Oregon State in the Super Regionals. The Indians also picked Pickens in 2004, in the 31st round after he batted .525 as a high school senior. He was an all-league selection in baseball, football and hockey in high school. As a sophomore at Michigan in 2006, he hit .302 with seven homers and 47 RBI in 64 games. In 59 games so far this year, he's hitting .347 with five homers and 41 RBI. 2007 CLEVELAND INDIANS JUNE DRAFT SELECTIONS ROUND 1 Beau Mills (13th overall) 3B-1B; Lewis-Clark State 6’3; 205; L/R; Born 8/15/86 (20) Resides in Visalia, CA; Scout: Greg Smith.
