Five members of the Lake County Captains have been selected to the 2007 South Atlantic League All-Star Team. First baseman Matt Whitney, catcher Matt McBride and third baseman Jared Goedert were chosen as starters. Right-handers Josh Tomlin and Hector Rondon also were picked. Goedert will not play due to his promotion to Kinston. The game will be played June 19 at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Ga.

Whitney, 23, is hitting .291 (68-for-234) through 58 games, though he's in a slight slump in June. After batting .329 in April and .296 in May, he's hitting .200 (8-for-40) in 10 games this month.

Whitney has 14 homers, 51 RBI and 40 runs and has played a decent first base in his first year at the position since switching from third. He has been particularly productive against lefty pitchers, batting .351 (20-for-57) with five homers and 17 RBI.

Drafted with the 33rd choice overall in 2002 out of high school, Whitney had a good debut season at Burlington that year, hitting .286 with 10 homers and 33 RBI in 45 games.

He then missed all of 2003 with a broken leg and had seen his batting average plummet in each of the past three seasons to .256, .242 and only .206 a year ago. He totaled only 21 homers over that time.

McBride, 22, taken with the 75th pick a year ago out of Lehigh University, is hitting .280 (54-for-193) through 49 games. He has four homers and 32 RBI. He's hitting .317 with runners in scoring position.

All of McBride's homers have come in home games. He's batting .290 at Classic Ballpark.

A year ago at Mahoning Valley, he hit .272 (50-for-184) with four homers and 31 RBI in 52 games after signing with the Indians.

Promoted to Lake County, he got off to a hot start this season, hitting .338 (22-for-65) with 15 RBI in 17 games during April.

Tomlin, 22, a 19th-round pick a year ago out of Texas Tech, picked up right where he left off in his first pro season.

At Mahoning Valley in 2006, Tomlin went 8-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 15 starts, allowing 56 hits and 15 walks in 77 1/3 innnings while striking out 69.

Promoted to Lake County, he's 5-0 with a 2.63 ERA in five starts and 11 relief appearances for the Captains. He also has a 1.50 ERA (one earned run in six innings) in one start for Class A Kinston.

Rondon, 19, signed out of Venezuela as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, is 4-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 12 starts -- though he is 0-2 in June.

He went 3-0 with a 3.23 ERA in May and has been very effective in day games, going 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA in five starts.

In 60 1/3 innings overall, he's walked 13 and struck out 49 in his first year with a full-season team.

Rondon went 3-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 2005 and was 3-4 with a 5.13 ERA last year for the Gulf Coast League Indians. In 118 innings coming into this season, he had waled only 11 and struck out 87.

Goedert, 22, a ninth-round pick a year ago from Kansas State, was simply sensational in 46 games for Lake County before being moved up to Kinston.

The third baseman hit .364 (60-for-165) with 16 homers and 51 RBI. Not bad for a guy who batted only .269 (64-for-238) with three homers and 27 RBI in his first pro season last year at Mahoning Valley.

Goedert, moved to second base upon being promoted, has hit only .205 with a homer and five RBI in his first 10 games at Kinston. Because of his promotion, he will not be available to represent Lake County at the All-Star Game.
