Five Mid-Range Draft Picks Are Signed

The Indians have signed five players selected in the middle rounds of last week's draft. John Mirabelli, the Indians' assistant general manager/scouting, anticipates talks to go slowly with some of the higher-round selections because of new draft rules in place this year. A key is that all draftees must be signed before Aug. 15. Any player not under contract then will be lost to his drafting team.

Should that happen, the club will get to select a player at the same position in the following draft as compensation. "We've begun talks, but predictably, they are going slowly," Mirabelli said Monday. "We anticipated that. With the new draft rules in place, there is going to be a feeling-out process."
