They won the AL West with staff ace Bartolo Colon compiling a 6.34 ERA in between trips to the disabled list. Third baseman Dallas McPherson missed the whole season and key players Chone Figgins and Garret Anderson were each on the shelf for a month, respectively. Yet manager Mike Scioscia still guided the Angels to the AL West title. Beware, baseball fans. This is a team that knows how to win.

The Angels will open the playoffs Wednesday in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.
It's one of the last places they'd like to be, really. The Angels' all-time regular-season winning percentage at Fenway Park is .401 (115-172), their second-lowest at any current AL stadium (behind only Toronto's Skydome/Rogers Centre). That includes a 2-5 mark there this season and a 14-21 mark in Mike Scioscia's eight seasons as manager.
It doesn't include a 1-4 mark in playoff games there -- 1-3 during the 1986 ALCS (including back-to-back losses after the Donnie Moore fiasco in Game 5) and 0-1 in the 2004 ALDS (a three-game sweep by the Red Sox).
"I think at times when we're playing well, when we're into our game, we've held up fine there," Scioscia said, pointing to a split of a four-game series in Boston in August. "You've got to get into your game there. It's a different park. It's unique.
"I don't think it's a comfort level with that park. I think it's within us to do it."
Two key parts of the Angels' pitching staff will have to turn around some personal history at Fenway Park. Game 1 starter John Lackey is 1-4 with a 7.68 ERA in seven career starts in Boston (including 0-2 this season) and setup man Scot Shields has a 17.65 ERA (17 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings) over 13 appearances at Fenway.
After his start at Fenway in August, Lackey joked about being on hand the day the historic stadium has to be demolished. But he shrugged off the significance of pitching there in the playoffs.
"You're going to have to play them eventually," Lackey said of drawing the Red Sox in the first round. "It'll be fun. I'll be there. I'll show up."
LAST GAME, ATHLETICS 3, ANGELS 2: The A's scored tiebreaking runs in the eighth and ninth to win. The Angels got home runs from Mike Napoli and Kendry Morales, with Morales' solo shot tying the game in the top of the ninth. RHP Jered Weaver went six innings in his final tune-up for the playoffs , allowing a solo homer to Daric Barton.
NOTES, QUOTES
. The Angels will start RHP John Lackey in Game 1 against Sox right-hander Josh Beckett. RHP Kelvim Escobar will start Game 2 with Weaver slated for Game 3. RHP Bartolo Colon made only the third relief appearance of his major-league career and the first in 10 years Saturday. He retired the side in order, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Scioscia opened the possibility that Colon could make the playoff roster and pitch out of the bullpen. "When you have a talent like Bart, you want him on your staff in some capacity," Scioscia said.
OF Vladimir Guerrero (tendinitis in his right triceps) has continued his throwing program, extending to approximately 150 feet Sunday. OF Gary Matthews Jr. (left knee) has been taking batting practice with the team. Both of them will be re-evaluated before Wednesday's playoff opener.
3B Chone Figgins went hitless in two at-bats before leaving Sunday's season finale. Figgins needed two more plate appearances to qualify for the batting title. He finished sixth in the AL with a .330 average, but was hitless in his last 22 at-bats to end the season.
Lackey's 3.01 ERA held up as the lowest in the AL for pitchers with enough innings to qualify. He is the first Angels pitcher to lead the league in ERA since Frank Tanana (2.54) in 1977.
BY THE NUMBERS: 116-176 -- Angels all-time record at Fenway Park (including 1-4 in two playoff series).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I haven't done math since high school." -- Lackey, when asked if he was aware of his standing in the ERA race.
EX-INDIAN FACTOR: First-base coach Alfredo Griffin played shortstop for the Indians; bullpen catcher Steve Soliz was in the Tribe farm system; RHP Bartolo Colon and RHP Justin Speier played for Indians; INF Maicer Izturiz played in Tribe farm system.
MEDICAL WATCH: OF Garret Anderson (conjunctivitis/pink eye) is not expected to miss any time; CF Gary Matthews Jr. (tendinitis, left knee) was held out of the final weekend of the season; RHP Kelvim Escobar (inflamed right shoulder) had his Sept. 22 start pushed back to Sept. 29; RHP Bartolo Colon (right elbow impingement) went on DL July 24. He started again Sept. 14, but was unable to make his Sept. 19 start, then started Sept. 22; RF Vladimir Guerrero (right triceps tendinitis) is questionable to play defense in the playoffs; RHP Chris Resop (right triceps tendinitis) to DL July 9 and had surgery Aug. 24 to shave down a bone spur; 3B Dallas McPherson (back surgery) missed the entire season.
