Cruising Around The Cactus League

Cruising Around The Cactus League

Among reasons the Indians anticipate returning to Arizona for spring training is the proximity of so many teams to their own facility. In recent years in Florida, they played the nearby Tigers, Astros and Braves several times rather than embark on too many lengthy bus trips of several hours to play other clubs. In 2009, they'll play 14 road games within an hour's drive of their new Goodyear home.

There's hardly any development around it –- yet -- though future construction sites may cause some traffic problems. Traffic and congestion is sure to pick up in 2010, when the Cincinnati Reds' complex is finished and they move in to share the ballpark. There are two outstanding golf courses nearby -- Raven at Verrado, about five miles west and the Golf Club of Estrella, about five miles south. The Phoenix Goodyear Airport is in the complex's backyard.

Long-time Tribe fans will want to make the trip to the old ballyard, which was the Indians' spring training home from 1947 through 1992. They won't recognize the place, which was updated in 1992, 1997 and again in 1999 – but there's plenty of nostalgia to be found in parts of the ballpark that dates back to the 1930s.
Tribe plays there: March 22.
