Indians' Top Prospects: No. 12

Kelvin De La Cruz

For each of the past 15 years, Indians Ink Magazine has ranked the top prospects in the Cleveland farm system. It began as a top 10 list and turned into a top 50 early this decade. This is our third year ranking the top 100 Tribe minor-leaguers. It factors a player's potential, accomplishments, how he's moved in the system, and projects it to what he could bring to the major-league team.

No. 12 -- Kelvin De La Cruz

The Kelvin De La Cruz File

Born:
Aug. 1, 1988 in La Vega, DR
Position: Pitcher
B/T: L/L
HT/WT: 6-5/187
Acquired: Signed as non-drafted free agent, Dec. 8, 2004.
Strengths: Has quickly developed into a top prospect thanks to a dynamite fastball that now tops out in the low to mid 90s and an average changeup and curve. Uses all three pitches. Continues to grow physically which means he could add more speed to his fastball. Averaged better than a strikeout per inning (130 IP/136K). Very intelligent.
Weaknesses: Does not yet have complete command of his fastball. Struggled some once he advanced to Kinston, where he walked 25 in just 29 1/3 innings.
2009 Projection: Finished the '08 season in Kinston's rotation and figures to be in the same role to begin '09.
