Gomez Wins; Aeros Lead Series, 2-0

Jeanmar Gomez

Jeanmar Gomez pitched six strong innings for the win and Jerad Head drove in three runs to lead Akron over Reading, 6-2. The Aeros lead the best-of-five Southern Division Championship Series, two games to none. The series shifts to Reading for Game 3, and if necessary Game 4. Should the Phillies win both those games, the decisive Game 5 would be at Akron's Canal Park on Sunday at 7:05 p.m.

Gomez, named last week the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Year, gave up one run on six hits and a walk, striking out three. Carlton Smith allowed one run over two innings and Neil Wagner struck out one in a perfect ninth inning for the Aeros.

Eastern League MVP Carlos Santana gave Akron a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a long home run to left field. Carlos Rivero drove in another run with a bases-loaded fielder's choice and Head added an RBI double later in the inning to make it 3-0.

In the sixth, Head had a two-run double and scored on a double by Jose Constanza to make it 6-0.

Aeros left-hander Eric Berger (3-1, 2.67 ERA) will oppose Mike Cisco (2-4, 4.58 ERA) in Game 3 on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.
