The Indians are sending 52 minor-league prospects to the Instructional League in Arizona. No. 1 draft choice Alex White and others will participate in daily drills at the team's spring training complex in Goodyear, Ariz., and play 15 games against other organzational clubs in the area. Six of the games will be against prospects from the Cincinnati Reds, now sharing the Goodyear complex.

There will be 20 pitchers, five catchers, 17 infielders and 10 outfielders from the Tribe's farm system taking part in the workouts from Sept. 21 through Oct. 16. Twenty of the players have not yet turned 20 years old. The oldest participants are 24-year-olds Josh Rodriguez and Matt McBride, who played this summer for Double-A Akron.
Some players will work on learning to play a new position. Kyle Bellows, a shortstop in college, is transitioning to third base. Greg Folgia, an outfielder, may get some work at catcher. Former catcher Matt McBride will continue to work on his play in the outfield and at first base.
Others are coming back from extended injuries, such as pitchers Kelvin De La Cruz and Gregorio Rosario as well as Rodriguez. Rosario, acquired from Seattle for right-hander Jason Davis in 2007, missed all of 2008 after having Tommy John surgery and pitched a bit for the Indians' club in the Arizona Rookie League this summer. De La Cruz, one of the organization's brightest pitching prospects entering this season, made two starts at Class A Kinston before being shut down. He returned to pitch 7 2-3 innings at Arizona late in the year.

The workouts will generally begin at 9 a.m., though most players will arrive well before that to get extra work in the batting cages and weight rooms. The length of workouts will depend on what the instructors have planned for that day, whether it be classroom work, on the field, or other duties.
