The Indians couldn't overcome a 4-0 deficit and lost in Milwaukee, 6-4, in their first meeting with the Brewers since 2001. Franklin Gutierrez was called up from Buffalo, but didn't have a good game in his first major-league start. Meanwhile down on the farm, all four full-season clubs in the Indians' organization got fine pitching as Buffalo, Akron and Lake County all earned victories.
Jhonny Peralta (.239) continued his recent resurgence, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, his sixth. Over the last two games, Peralta is 6-for-8 with four runs and four RBI.
But Peralta and Gutierrez each committed errors in the field, though neither contributed to any Brewers runs.
Gutierrez, called up when outfielder Casey Blake was put on the disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle, also made an error in left field and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
C.C. Sabathia (5-3, 3.08 ERA) gave up five runs over six innings, bouncing back from a poor first inning in which he yielded four hits and four runs. The lefty allowed seven hits and two walks overall, striking out nine. Fernando Cabrera (6.04 ERA) then gave up one run over two innings.
Sabathia continued to swing a good bat in interleague games, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. He's now hitting .286 (8-for-28) with one homer and six RBI in his career.
NOTABLE: The Indians fell to 2-2 this year in interleague games after going 15-3 against National League clubs a year ago. ... RHP Fausto Carmona has compiled a 1.38 ERA in eight relief outings, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs over 13 innings, striking out 14.
Class AAA Buffalo (35-35) won at Durham, 6-1, as Andy Marte (.262) hit a two-run homer, his eighth of the season and sixth in two weeks. Lou Merloni (.333) and Jake Gautreau (.192) each had two hits and Joe Inglett (.303) had one hit and scored twice for the Bisons. Hyang-Nam Choi (3-4, 3.40 ERA) gave up three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings, striking out four. Andrew Brown (2.68 ERA) allowed one run over 1 1/3 innings, Edward Mujica pitched another 1 2/3 perfect innings and Ben Howard (3.95 ERA) worked a perfect ninth.Mujica now has yet to allow an earned run in 37 2/3 innings all season.
Class AA Akron (43-23), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped Thursday night, got back in the win column as Sean Smith and two relievers combined on a 3-0 seven-hit shutout victory at New Britain. Smith (8-0, 1.61 ERA) allowed four hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out six. Kyle Collins (9.45 ERA) allowed three hits over two-thirds of an inning and Juan Lara (2.88 ERA) preserved the shutout and got his sixth save with 1 1/3 perfect innings. Catcher Dave Wallace (.189) hit two solo homers, giving him three for the season. In his last two games, Wallace has gone 5-for-8 with three homers. Eider Torres (.271) had two hits and three stolen bases, giving him 28 for the season.
Class A Kinston (44-21) won at Myrtle Beach, 2-1. Joe Ness (6-2, 2.42 ERA) allowed three hits and two walks over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five. Michael Finocchi yielded an unearned run over two-thirds of an inning, Ryan Knippschild (4.22 ERA) struck out the only two batters he faced and T.J. Burton (5.76 ERA) gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth for his 12th save. Rodney Choy Foo (.246) hit his first homer and Jordan Brown (.267) drove in Kinston's other run with a sacrifice fly.
Class A Lake County (27-39) got only four hits and lost at Lakewood, 1-0. Albert Vargas (4-9, 4.61 ERA) was the tough-luck loser, allowing one run on five hits over six innings, striking out three. Cody Bunkelman (3.14 ERA) pitched two scoreless innings.
