Scout.com staff reports
IndiansInk.net | Oct 2, 2007 |
Former Indians manager Charlie Manuel guided the Philadelphia Phillies to an improbable championship in the NL East. The Phillies were hit hard by injuries throughout the season, constantly reworked their pitching staff, but overcame a seven-game deficit with 17 to play to pass the bumbling New York Mets. Now, they play a team even hotter than they are: the wild-card winning Colorado Rockies.
Jimmy Rollins was right.
The Phillies really were the "team to beat" in the NL East.
During the champagne celebration that followed the Phillies' division-clinching 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday, Rollins admitted he once doubted that day actually would arrive.
"For two innings back in June," said Rollins, who first declared the Phillies would be the "team to beat" in January. "Everyone was getting hurt. We were just playing whirl-a-pitcher. We were getting beat in like the fifth or sixth inning. We were making a pitching change, and I walked over to (third baseman Abraham) Nunez.
"I was like, 'Nuney, this really just might be a rebuilding year. I wasn't saying to quit. I was just saying to know what battles you can fight. But we came back and won that game. I came back in the clubhouse and said, 'That's the last time I'll ever think like that again.' "
The Phillies made the playoffs despite opening 4-11 and having a pitching staff that amassed a 4.75 ERA. Since the institution of the wild card, only the 1995 Colorado Rockies made the playoffs with a higher ERA (4.97).
On Sept. 12, the Phillies were seven games behind the first-place Mets with only 17 left. But the Mets lost 12 of 17; the Phillies won 13 games and passed them on the final day.
"I think who we have and how we play, our chemistry, our atmosphere, the guys on our team, that's what made the difference in pulling this off," manager Charlie Manuel said, his white NL East champion T-shirt soaking. "Teams I've had before, they were divided at times. This team here is a team, and they stay together. They like each other. They get along good. That makes a big difference, believe me."
LAST GAME, PHILLIES 6, NATIONALS 1: Rollins went 2-for-3 with a triple and 1B Ryan Howard collected three RBI to lift the Phillies to an NL East-clinching victory in the season finale. The Phillies made the playoffs for the first time since 1993. LHP Jamie Moyer tossed 5 1/3 solid innings before relievers J.C. Romero, Tom Gordon and Brett Myers finished off the victory. Howard hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
NOTES, QUOTES
SS Rollins sought ways to jump-start the Phillies' offense Sunday. He opened the first inning with a single up the middle, stole two bases and scored on 2B Chase Utley's sacrifice fly. In the sixth, he swatted a pitch off the top of the right-field fence and hustled to third with a triple, his franchise-record 20th of the season. With that, he became the fourth player to have 20 or more doubles, triples, homers and steals in a season, joining Wildfire Schulte (1911 Cubs), Willie Mays (1957 Giants) and Curtis Granderson (2007 Tigers). "(Saturday), we came out flat," Rollins said. "There was no pressure. If we lose, we still have tomorrow. We didn't have that option today. I came in, ate like two bites of an omelet. I didn't have much of an appetite. I just watched how he (Washington starter Jason Bergmann) pitched (on video). I was thinking about how to get it started."
Moyer didn't want any distractions Sunday. So, he refused to look at the scoreboard, which read "Marlins 7, Mets 0" before he threw his first pitch. Moyer allowed one unearned run in 5 1/3 innings and struck out six to put the Phillies in the playoffs for the first time since 1993. It was his 230th career victory, 59th on the all-time list.
Howard figured out a way to beat the shift. In the third inning Sunday, he dunked a two-run single over the head of Nationals second baseman Ronnie Belliard, who was playing in shallow right field. In the seventh, Howard went back to mashing the ball over the right-field fence, hitting his team-leading 47th homer.
C Carlos Ruiz left the game after the fourth with a left elbow bruise after being hit by a pitch from Nationals starter Jason Bergmann. X-rays were negative, and Ruiz isn't expected to miss significant time.
C Chris Coste might have a new ending for his book. Coste, who is writing an autobiography about his Phillies career, now has to add his experiences from making the playoffs. The Phillies reached the postseason for the first time since 1993. "It's not the end of the story," Coste said. "It's only the beginning of the end because four weeks from now (after the World Series), we're going to have this same conversation. And that will be the end of the story."
BY THE NUMBERS: 21 -- Consecutive stolen bases without being caught by the Phillies until Shane Victorino was thrown out trying to steal second in the third inning Friday night.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everything is hinging on every single pitch. It's an exciting time to be out there because you want to do that, you want to say, 'Hey, here's what I'm capable of doing.'" -- RHP Adam Eaton, on pitching in a playoff race.
EX-INDIAN FACTOR: Assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr., was an outfielder on Indians' 1995 World Series team; manager Charlie Manuel, RHP Kane Davis, RHP Jose Mesa and C Chris Coste, a former Tribe farmhand, all were part of the Phillies' division-winning season; broadcaster Larry Andersen pitched for the Indians in the mid-1970s.
MEDICAL WATCH: C Ruiz (left elbow bruise) was hit by a pitch on Sept. 30, but may be ready for the playoffs; RHP Ryan Madson (strained right shoulder) went on the disabled list July 30. He hopes to return now for the postseason; RHP Scott Mathieson (inflamed elbow after Tommy John surgery in September 2006) opened the season on the 15-day DL, was transferred to the 60-day DL on June 29, began a rehab assignment Aug. 13, and missed the rest of the season; RHP Yoel Hernandez (right shoulder strain) went on the DL Aug. 21 and is out for the season; RHP Freddy Garcia (sore right shoulder) went on the DL June 10. After meeting with Dr. James Andrews on June 14, he opted not to have surgery. He began a rehab assignment Aug. 18, but had season-ending surgery Aug. 30; LHP Mike Zagurski (right hamstring strain and muscle tear) went on the DL Aug. 19 and had season-ending surgery a week later; RHP Jon Lieber (ruptured tendon in right foot) went on the DL June 21 and had season-ending surgery July 6.
