Every club in every sport wants to believe it is a team of destiny. If the Colorado Rockies don't win another game this year, they've already reached a dizzy destination. The most incredible stretch run in history -- capped by an improbable comeback win in the 13th inning in a one-game playoff -- put this club assembled by former Indians assistant GM Dan O'Dowd into the playoffs.
The Rockies capped an incredible season-ending run with a wild finish in the wild-card tiebreaker. They fell behind the San Diego Padres 8-6 in the top of the 13th inning Monday night and still won.
All it took was a three-run rally in the bottom half against all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman. Kazuo Matsui doubled and scored on a double by Troy Tulowitzki. He scored the tying run on Matt Holliday's triple. Todd Helton got an intentional walk. Jamey Carroll then hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to right that gave Holliday just enough room to make a head-first dive into the plate. Some question whether or not he even touched the plate before he lay there, his mouth bleeding after a collision with catcher Michael Barrett.
The Rockies' second postseason appearance -- they were the wild card in 1995 -- begins Wednesday afternoon against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in Game 1 of the best-of-five NL Division Series.
"You can't draw it up any better than that," said manager Clint Hurdle. "You don't think that someone drawing this up doesn't have a sense of drama, a sense of humor?"
Right now, the Rockies have a sense of satisfaction, although they insist there's no false sense of security. They had to go that extra day and those extra innings to claim the NL wild card -- to open the door for the more sought-after goal -- the World Series. "We're in the hunt, and that's a first step," said Hurdle. "I've been to the World Series and lost (with Kansas City in 1980), and it's no fun. We need to dig in and move to the next step."
There were more than a few moments on Monday night when the sellout crowd of 48,404 had to wonder if the Rockies were going to miss the first step.
RHP Jorge Julio, the ninth of 10 pitchers used by Hurdle, came on in the top of the 13th and promptly walked ex-Indian Brian Giles and yielded a two-run homer to Scott Hairston. Hoffman, however, couldn't close it.
"One thing this team never does is quit, and we showed that again," said Tulowitzki.
Colorado was nine games below .500 in mid-May but steadily climbed back, undaunted by an eight-game losing streak in which closer Brian Fuentes blew four saves in seven games. Then came the biggest stretch-run rally in baseball history.
Ignited by a franchise-record 11-game winning streak, the Rockies bounced back from a Friday night loss to Arizona to beat the Diamondbacks on Saturday and Sunday, while the Padres were blowing back-to-back leads in Milwaukee, forcing the one-game, win-or-go-home showdown.
And they won in a game that lasted one inning longer than the Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-5, 12-inning win over the Milwaukee Braves in 1959, a best-of-three playoffs the Dodgers swept. Gil Hodges scored the winning run in the 12th on shortstop Felix Mantilla's error.
LAST GAME, ROCKIES 9, PADRES 8 (13 innings): The Rockies capped their comeback season by overcoming a 5-3 deficit in the third and 8-6 deficit in the 13th to win the NL wild-card tiebreaker. RHP Ramon Ortiz took over after Julio gave up a two-run homer in the top of the 13th and got three outs for the win. RHP Matt Herges was the hero, working three shutout innings earlier.
NOTES, QUOTES:
LHPs Jeff Francis and Franklin Morales are in line to start the first two games of the NL Division Series on Wednesday and Thursday. RHPs Ubaldo Jimenez and Josh Fogg would be rested for Games 3 and 4 at Coors Field on Saturday and Sunday.
The Rockies set a major league record for highest fielding percentage in a season, .98925. They had only four errors in the final 15 games, 14 of which they won.
LF Matt Holliday was 2-for-6 and drove in two runs, including the game-tying run in the 13th with a triple, to become the fifth player in 59 years to lead the NL in average and RBI. He hit .3396226 to beat out Atlanta's Chipper Jones, who hit .3372319. He drove in 137 runs, one more than Ryan Howard of Philadelphia.
OF Seth Smith, a September call-up, had a pinch-hit triple in the sixth and scored on Matsui's sac fly. The former backup quarterback at Mississippi is 5-for-7, with all the hits as a pinch-hitter.
1B Todd Helton will no longer be on the list of players never appearing in a postseason game. Two of the top three on the active list are about to have their status eliminated. Jeff Cirillo, the leader at 1,617 games, is with Arizona, which opens the NL Division Series against the Cubs on Wednesday. Helton is third at 1,577. Damion Easley of the Mets will be the new active leader at 1,593.
BY THE NUMBERS: 3.89 -- ERA for Rockies pitching staff since the All-Star break going into Saturday, lowest in the NL.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I guess I am superstitious because I used to be, and now I try so hard not to do things the same way that it makes me superstitious." -- Rockies manager Clint Hurdle.
EX-INDIAN FACTOR: GM Dan O'Dowd was an assistant GM in Cleveland; bench coach Jamie Quirk homered in his only at-bat for the Tribe in 1984; hitting coach Alan Cockrell and OF Willy Taveras played in the Tribe farm system; first-base coach Glenallen Hill was an Indians outfielder; LHP Tom Martin, released by Rockies in July, pitched for Indians in 1998-2000; broadcast analyst George Frazier pitched for Tribe in 1984; play-by-play man Jack Corrigan handled Tribe TV and radio duties for 17 years.
MEDICAL WATCH: OF Taveras (strained right quad) out since Sept. 8, may return; RHP Jason Hirsh (fractured right fibula) went to DL Aug. 8, but may be ready for the NL Championship Series if the Rockies advance; RHP Elmer Dessens (strained left hamstring) hasn't pitched since Sept. 7, threw a bullpen session Sept. 16 and a simulated game Sept. 19; RHP Aaron Cook (strained rib cage) went to DL on Aug. 15, pitched at Class AAA Colorado Springs on Sept. 1, but aggravated the injury and went to the 60-day DL. He hopes to pitch in postseason; RHP Ramon Ramirez (inflamed right elbow) to 60-day DL Sept. 8; RHP Darren Clarke (inflamed right shoulder) to 60-day DL Aug. 16; OF Sean Barker (strained left hamstring) to 60-day DL Aug. 12; RHP Rodrigo Lopez (torn flexor muscle in right elbow) to DL on July 27 and season-ending Tommy John surgery Aug. 22; RHP Zach McClellan (inflamed right shoulder) to DL on May 14, season-ending surgery June 21.
