Six years ago, when new general manager Mark Shapiro decided to trade his staff ace, it was a relatively easy call. After all, the Indians had already begun a rebuilding phase by trading Roberto Alomar the previous off-season. And most of the team’s other stars who had been the nucleus of the great run of championships from 1995 thru 2001 had either retired or were scattered among other teams.
