| Signed by the Yankees to a four-year deal after he defected from Cuba before the 2003 season... Went 7-2 with a 3.30 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 71 innings in 2003, mostly as a reliever... Contreras will become the fourth starter for the Yanks in 2004.
Contreras' signing is the move that prompted Boston Red Sox owner Larry Lucchino to describe the Yankees' organization as "the Evil Empire". The Sox, and several others, were outbid by the Yankees for Contreras' services. |
