Cory Burns Profile
Cory Burns blew a save opportunity for the first time as a professional, but earned the win when Mahoning Valley scored in the 11th inning for a 7-6 win at Vermont.
Burns (3-0, 1.38 ERA) allowed an inherited runner to score in the eighth inning that tied the score and threw away a win for Marty Popham that he was trying to save.
Burns allowed only one hit and struck out three over 3 2-3 innings. In 16 outings out of the Scrappers' bullpen, he's 7-for-8 in save chances. In 26 innings, he has given up only 13 hits and four walks, striking out 27.
The Cleveland Indians drafted him in the eighth round with every intention of grooming the right-hander as a closer.
Burns got the win when Dwight Childs hit his first pro homer in the 11th inning. Burns, Childs and starting pitcher Preston Guilmet were all drafted by Cleveland out of the University of Arizona in June and assigned to Mahoning Valley.
