1B Stephen Head: Hitting well by Chuck Murr of IndiansInk.net, August 17, 2009 at 11:36pm ET
Stephen Head Profile
Stephen Head hit his third home run in four games for Columbus in an 8-4 loss at Toledo.
Head (.249) hit a solo shot in the second inning, only his sixth homer in 54 games with the Clippers. The 25-year-old first baseman-outfielder has struggled all year with a sore right knee after injuring it during spring training.
Head, drafted in the second round by the Indians in 2005, was excpected to be playing in Cleveland by now, especially after the success he had in his first year in the minors. In 57 games between Mahoning Valley and Kinston in '05, Head hit .308 with 10 homers and 50 RBI and appeared on the fast track to the majors.
He has never had a consistent season, however, usually getting off to woeful starts before rallying in August. His current hot streak appears to be another late-season surge that will give him so-so numbers and it is likely that the lefty hitter, once considered a top prospect, will be left unprotected in the Rule 5 draft in December.
In 55 games with the Clippers and two with Mahoning Valley when he went on an injury rehab assignment, Head has only a .245 average, 10 doubles, six homers and 26 RBI.
That brings his career totals to .263 with 59 homers and 276 RBI in 477 career games in the minors.
