Beau Mills drove in three runs with two singles and a double to lead Akron to a 12-3 win over visiting Bowie.

Mills (.264) has had a solid if unspectacular season at Double A, but the Indians' No. 1 draft pick in 2007 has been a bit of a disappointment this year. The first baseman batted .293 with 21 homers and 90 RBI a year ago at Class A Kinston -- the kind of numbers the organization expected again.

Mills has switched from third base and played exclusivly at first this year, making nine errors and handling the position well. But he has not developed as a hitter, which is the reason why Cleveland made him a top pick. His swing has gotten a bit long, leaving him susceptible to strikeouts.

The 23-year-old lefty hitter has gone 120-for-455 with 11 homers, 29 doubles, 51 runs and 67 RBI. But he has a low .304 on-base percentage, drawing only 27 walks and striking out 82 times.

Next season will be a big one for Mills as it likely will determine whether or not he has the stuff to make it to the majors or will be yet another top pick who stalls at Double A -- as did No. 1 choices Jason Cooper, Brad Snyder, Corey Smith and others in recent years.

Drafted by Boston in 44th round, 2004 ... drafted by Cleveland in first round (No. 13 overall), in 2007.

Son of Brad Mills, former major-leaguer and current bench coach with Boston Red Sox. ... Helped Lewis-Clark State (Lewiston, Idaho) win the 2007 NAIA Championship, getting three homers and eight RBI in the title game. ... Overall, he hit .458 (110-for-240) with 100 runs, 22 doubles, one triple, 38 homers, 123 RBI and six stolen bases in 62 games and was named the NAIA Player of the Year. ... Played two years at Fresno State before transferring ... Batted .319 with 22 homers and 63 RBI in 59 games as a freshman. As a sophomore with the Bulldogs, hit .355 with 20 doubles, 14 homers and 58 RBI in 52 games.
