RP Greg Aquino: Good stretch ends

Greg Aquino made one of two Columbus errors in the bottom of the ninth and the Clippers' closer allowed three unearned runs to turn a 7-5 lead into an 8-7 loss at Indianapolis.

Aquino (3.14 ERA) had pitched well since being outrighted to Triple-A by the Cleveland Indians in July. He went 1-0 with five saves and a 3.60 ERA in eight outings in July for Columbus and started August with five more saves in his first eight outings.

The right-hander is 1-2 with 14 saves in 27 games for the Clippers overall. In 10 games for Cleveland, he went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA and allowed only 13 hits in 16 innings, but gave up an alarming 15 walks while striking out 11.

Against Indianapolis, he gave up a leadoff single, then fielded a ball hit back to him but threw wildly trying to get the runner at second base. He got an out on a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners up, then issued an intentional walk to load the bases.

Aquino got the next batter to hit a potential game-ending double play ball to shortstop Niuman Romero, but his flip to second baseman Jesus Merchan was dropped for an error, allowing one run to score and keeping the bases loaded. Aquino then gave up a two-run single to center that won it for Indianapolis.

Aquino has the stuff to pitch in a big-league bullpen, but just doesn't have consistent command. He will tantalize with a few fine outings, then suddenly lose control. Don't expect him to be back with the Indians next year since the organization has added so many pitchers and will likely try to get a few more during the offseason.
