Russell Young, staked to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, pitched six shutout innings as Kinston defeated visiting Potomac, 7-1.
Young (6-6, 4.43 ERA) struck out seven, walked one and gave up three hits. The 23-year-old left-hander has pitched very well in his last 10 starts since July 8, going 4-3 with a 2.18 ERA. In 62 innings over that time, he has walked only eight, struck out 36 and given up 59 hits.
Jonathan Holt (5.24 ERA) gave up one run over 1 2-3 innings and Dallas Cawiezell (3.05 ERA) fanned two over a scoreless 1 1-3 innings for Kinston.
Hot-hitting Doug Pickens (.297) went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI; Richard Martinez (.222) was 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI; Ronald Rivas (.248) 2-for-5 with a run and RBI; and Cord Phelps (.256) 2-for-3 with two walks and a double to lead the offense.
