Clayton Cook Profile
Clayton Cook pitched five shutout innings as Mahoning Valley won the second game of a doubleheader with Jamestown, 2-0. The Scrappers lost the first game, 4-3.
Cook (5-3, 2.79 ERA) struck out six and allowed only three hits and one walk. Matt Packer (0.82) earned his first career save in his fourth outing since signing a pro contract with the Cleveland Indians. The left-hander out of the University of Virginia fanned two and gave up one hit over two innings.
Cook, a ninth-round draft choice out of high school a year ago, has been very impressive since turning pro. He went 1-2 with a 2.52 ERA in 11 games including six starts last season for the Gulf Coast League Indians. In 14 starts this year, he has struck out 64 in 67 2-3 innings, allowing 55 hits and 26 walks.
Jason Kipnis (.337) and Ben Carlson (.227) drove in the Scrappers runs in the win.
