Eric Berger Profile
Eric Berger struck out seven over 5 1-3 scoreless innings as the Akron Aeros won at Altoona, 4-0.
Berger (3-1, 2.67 ERA) gave up six hits and walked three. Steven Wright allowed only two hits over 2 2-3 innings and Brian Grening worked a scoreless ninth to finish the shutout. Grening has yet to allow a run in nine innings over five outings since being promoted to Akron.
Berger began the 2009 season at Class A Kinston, but is having a fine second pro season. Drafted out of the University of Arizona in the eighth round a year ago, he went 2-0 with a 2.11 ERA in 2008, but was shut down due to some elbow tenderness after only 38 innings.
In 144 innings overall between Kinston and Akron this year, the lefty is 10-9 with a 2.50 ERA in 27 starts. He has struck out 133 and allowed 61 walks and 125 hits.
The 23-year-old had a disastrous Double-A debut on Aug. 7, when he was pounded for 13 hits and five runs in 5 2-3 innings. In five starts since, he has given up only five runs in 28 innings, a 1.61 ERA.
Jerad Head (.289) sparked the Akron offense in the win, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run and RBI.
