Clayton Cook struck out six over 5 2-3 scoreless innings to help Mahoning Valley to a 3-1 win at Brooklyn in the first game of the New York-Penn League playoffs.
Cook gave up two hits and one walk after oing 5-3 with a 2.79 ERA in 14 starts for the Scrappers, who won the regular-season division title.
Antwonie Hubbard yielded a one run and struck out four over 2 1-3 innings and Cory Burns pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
Outfielder Jason Kipnis, the Indians' second-round draft pick, went 2-for-4 with a solo homer to lead the offense. Shortstop Rafael Vera was 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI and third baseman Jesus Brito tripled and scored Mahoning Valley's other run.
