Jason Kipnis Profile

Jason Kipnis hit a two-run homer to help Mahoning Valley to a 3-1 win over Brooklyn and a two-game sweep of a first-round playoff series in the New York-Penn League.

The Scrappers await the winner of the series between Staten Island and Lowell, which is tied at one game apiece.

Kipnis hit his second homer of the series in the third inning. The outfielder batted .306 with one homer during the regular season after signing with the Cleveland Indians, who made him their second-round draft pick in June.

Right-hander Vidal Nuno gave up only one hit over five scoreless innings and got the win. He struck out five and walked one.

Austin Adams then walked three over two innings and yielded a run before Tyler Sturdevant and Guido Fonseca each pitched one hitless inning with Fonseca earning a save.

Mahoning Valley took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Casey Frawley drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a single by Jesus Brito. Ben Carlson followed with an RBI single.

In the third, Argenis Martinez had a one-out single and scored on Kipnis' drive to right-center.

The Scrappers have never lost a first-round playoff game in their history, going 8-0 all-time.
