Jason Kipnis, the Indians' second-round draft pick this year out of Arizona State, is back home ... and still hitting well.

Kipnis hit a three-run homer to help a team the Indians rout a team of Texas Rangers prospects 14-1 in the Arizona Instructional League.

Kipnis went 2-for-5 as Cleveland players totaled 18 hits.

The outfielder helped Mahoning Valley reach the championship series in the New York-Penn League after signing with Cleveland this summer. In 29 games, he hit .306 with one homer and 19 RBI. He had a couple of big homers in the playoffs for the Scrappers.

Biography:
Drafted by San Diego in the fourth round, 2008; drafted by Cleveland in the second round, 2009.

Was captain of the baseball and football team in high school ... hit .520 with eight homers and 36 stolen bases as a senior in 2005.

Did not play in 2006 at University of Kentucky, then as a redshirt freshman in 2006, hit .337 with six homers, 27 RBI and 11 steals in 12 attempts in 34 games.

Transferred to Arizona State and started all 62 games in 2008, hitting .371 with 14 homers and 73 RBI. Also had 16, doubles, six triples, went 24-for-28 in steal attempts and scored 76 runs.

As a junior in 2009, he led the Sun Devils to the semi-finals of the NCAA College World Series, batting .384 (91-for-237) with 76 runs, 21 doubles, four triples, 16 homers and 71 RBI in 63 games (62 starts).
