Santo Frias Profile
Santo Frias' fastball was timed at 94 mph during a good relief outing for the Indians' team in the Arizona Instructional League.
Frias worked 2 1-3 scoreless innings in a 14-1 win over a team of Texas Rangers prospects. The right-hander gave up one hit, two walks and struck out four. He threw first-pitch strikes to four of the nine batters he faced and averaged 93 mph on the 38 pitches he threw overall.
Frias was only so-so this past summer as he tried to convert to pitching in relief. He went 2-1 with a 3.74 ERA in 19 games out of the bullpen for Class A Lake County. Promoted to Kinston, he was 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA and one save in 17 appearances. Overall, he had 69 strikeouts in 61 2-3 innings and at age 21 remains one of the better pitching prospects in the Tribe system.
Also in Arizona, Marty Popham had another good outing. The right-hander gave up two hits in four scoreless innings in the win over the Rangers. He walked one, fanned four, topped out at 90 mph, and threw first-pitch strikes to six of the 14 batters he faced.
Travis Turek also worked in the win, allowing one run and two hits over 2 2-3 innings. He struck out three without a walk, topped out at 91 and had six first-pitch strikes in facing nine batters overall.
