P Bryce Stowell: A good outing

Bryce Stowell Profile

Bryce Stowell pitched 3 2-3 scoreless innings this past weekend for the Indians in an 8-1 loss to a team of Los Angeles Dodgers prospects in the Arizona Instructional League.

Stowell gave up only one hit and walked three while striking out five. He made first-pitch strikes to nine of the 15 batters he faced, topping out at 92 mph.

Stowell signed with Cleveland in 2008 for a reported $725,000 -- far above what was slotted for a 22nd-round pick. The Indians at the time thought the money was worth it to convince the 6-2 right-hander to leave UC Irvine and turn pro.

Stowell was inconsistent in his first pro season this summer, however. In 22 games including seven starts between Lake County (three games, nine innings) and Kinston (19 games, 61 innings), he went 4-6 with a 4.76 ERA.

He was wildly inconsistent, following a sensational outing with a poor one. When he threw his fastball and sharp slider for strikes, he had success. In 70 innings overall, he fanned 77. But he also walked 37 and gave up 68 hits.

The Indians believe Stowell can move rapidly through their farm system once he maintains his mechanics. That is the primary part of his game that he is working on in Arizona -- trying to repeat his delivery.
