P Rob Bryson: Faces 3, fans 3 by Chuck Murr of IndiansInk.net, October 5, 2009 at 10:30pm ET
Rob Bryson Profile
Rob Bryson struck out all three batters he faced in a 4-3 win by the Indians' team in the Arizona Instructional League against a team of Cincinnati Reds prospects.
Bryson threw 15 pitches, topping out at 93 mph. That's good news to the Indians since he missed most of the 2009 season after having surgery on his right shoulder a year ago. He was one of four players acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in July 2008 for CC Sabathia, but got injured shortly after joining the Cleveland organization.
Bryson will turn 22 in December and if healthy, has the stuff to be a good setup reliever. In his first pro season in 2007, he struck out 70 and walked only 12 in 54 innings while going 3-0 with eight saves and a 2.67 ERA in short-season ball in the Brewers system.
He began the 2008 season at Class A West Virginia and went 3-2 with five saves and 4.25 ERA before the trade. In 55 innings, he fanned 73. Then in three games for Lake County, he struck out 11 over 12 1-3 innings, going 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA before getting injured.
Bryson came back in August to work three innings for the Indians' team in the Arizona League. He gave up four earned runs, four hits and two walks, striking out five.
The 6-1, 200-pound right-hander does have great stuff. The Indians are going to have to guard against rushing him back, however. Bryson is still very young and if he regains his form, could be a right-handed version of Tony Sipp, the lefty who looked good in relief for Cleveland as a rookie this year.
