Jason Smit had two hits including a home run for the Indians' team in a 10-5 loss to a team of Texas Rangers prospects in the Arizona Instructional League.

Smit will turn 20 years old on Oct. 27, and started to show promise this year at short-season Mahoning Valley. He hit .279 with one homer and 23 RBI in 43 games.

Signed out of Australia as a skinny infielder at age 16 in the summer of 2006, Smit hit only .214 with one homer in his first pro action the next summer with the Gulf Coast League Indians. He missed much of the 2008 season with a shoulder injury and hit only .236 with one homer in 23 games with the GCL Indians.

Smit was moved to the outfield this year to protect his shoulder and responded with a decent year. He's an enthusiastic worker and the organization believes he'll eventually get a bit of pop in his bat as he fills out his 6-0, 165-pound frame.
