SP Trey Haley: Still erratic by Chuck Murr of IndiansInk.net, October 13, 2009 at 11:09am ET
Trey Haley Profile
Trey Haley keeps working on his command in the Arizona Instructional League with inconsistent results.
The right-hander, drafted in the second round by the Indians in 2008, gave up two runs on three hits and two walks over two innings in a 5-1 loss to the Peoria team about to start play in the Arizona Fall League.
Haley made first-pitch strikes to only five of the 12 batters he faced.
The No. 76 pick overall two years ago, Haley turned age 18 two weeks after the draft and then pitched only 2 1-3 innings as a professional last summer, allowing eight runs and walking seven.
He spent the 2009 season with Lake County in the Class A South Atlantic League and went 4-8 with a 5.56 ERA in 19 games including 16 starts. In 77 2-3 innings, he gave up 70 hits and an alarming 65 walks while striking out 57.
The 6-3, 180-pounder was hit very hard by right-handers this season, as they batted .292 against him. Lefties hit only .167 against him. He also forced lefties to hit into three times as many outs on the ground than in the air.
Haley is young and has good stuff. The Indians will be patient with him -- as long as he takes instruction and tries to move forward. Another year with astronomical walks won't do him any good, however.
