Carlton Smith Profile
Carlton Smith had a nightmarish outing for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall league on Friday. Not all of it was his own doing.
The right-hander gave up five runs -- all unearned -- in only two-thirds of an inning in a 13-3 loss to the Peoria Javelinas.
Trailing, 4-3, Smith came on in the fifth inning in relief and made 31 pitches, 19 of them for strikes. He gave up two hits and one walk. After a couple of errors, he yielded a three-run homer.
Smith had a decent season at Double-A Akron in 2009, going 6-2 with a 2.72 ERA and three saves in 37 outings, 35 of them in relief. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up 68 hits and 23 walks in 79 1-3 innings, striking out 40.
Drafted in the 21st round in 2004, Smith has a 32-19 career record and 4.01 ERA in five years in the minors. He started 64 times in 77 appearances over his first four years and was moved almost exclusively to relief this season.
The only other player from the Indians organization to play in the game was left fielder Nick Weglarz, who went 0-for-2 with a walk and RBI. He also struck out twice.
