Niuman Romero Profile
Niuman Romero, a surprise September callup by the Cleveland Indians, has been sent outright to Triple-A Columbus.
The 24-year-old infielder got the call to the majors despite hitting only .240 with one homer in 119 games combined between Columbus and Double-A Akron. In 486 career games in the minors, he has a .254 average and 12 homers.
Romero, a switch-hitter who can play any of the four infield positions, batted only .143 (2-for-14) with two runs and no RBI for the Indians.
The native of Venezuela had his best season in 2008 at Class A Kinston, hitting .296 with six homers and 53 RBI in 109 games.
The thinking is that Romero was called up as an example to others in the organization that a player with versatility and strong work ethic can make it. He's got potential as a utility player, but it is doubtful that Romero would ever crack the Indians' starting infield.
