| Indians' Branyan not yet ready by Chuck Murr of IndiansInk.net, March 10, 2010 at 8:17pm ET Russell Branyan Profile Manager Manny Acta says he has no timetable for Russell Branyan to play in his first exhibition game. The Indians signed the 34-year-old to a $2 million free-agent contract last month and Acta immediately named him the starting first baseman. "Branyan's not ready yet," Acta said. "He's still in the process of finishing up his rehab." Branyan was hitting over .300 with 19 homers entering July, when he began feeling pain from a herniated disk in his back. He kept playing and his production suffered before finally going on the disabled list in mid-August. "We knew this coming in," Acta said, adding that Branyan continues to do light baseball-related work in addition to conditioning drills. Despite not being on the field yet this spring, Branyan has the early lead for funniest clubhouse remark. A veteran sportswriter interested in Branyan's condition asked, "Russell, exactly where are you physically?" Without batting an eye, Branyan replied: "Right here, about five feet in front of you." |
