Captains Advance To Midwest Finals

Vidal Nuno and four relievers pitched the Lake County Captains into the Class A Midwest League championship series with a 6-1 win at Great Lakes. The Captains won the decisive third game of the best-of-three semifinal as Casey Frawley and Argenis Martinez each had two hits. Lake County, which won the first half title in the East Division, will play Clinton (Iowa) in a best-of-five title series.

The Captains will send right-hander Jason Knapp to the mound in Game 1 Wednesday night. Lake County will play host to Game 3 on Saturday night and if games four and five are needed, they would also be played at the Captains' Classic Ballpark.

Nuno gave up only one run on five hits over 5 1-3 innings against the Loons. He walked three and struck out six, then turned it over to the bullpen.

Owen Dew, hit hard in a Game 2 loss, bounced back to pitch 1 1-3 scoreless innings and Jeremy Johnson added 1 1-3 hitless innings. Mike Rayl gave up a walk and a hit without getting anybody out in the ninth, but Jose Flores picked him up. Flores fanned the first two men he faced and got the final out on a fly ball to center.

Greg Folgia and Delvi Cid had RBI singles in a three-run second inning. Martinez also drove in a run with a fielder's choice.

Frawley opened the third with a homer to make it 4-0.

Jason Smit doubled to open the fourth and scored on Martinez's one-out single for a 5-1 lead after the Loons had scored in the bottom of the third.

Martinez singled to open the seventh, was bunted to second by Cid and scored on a pinch-hit single by Tyler Holt. Singles by Frawley and Chase Burnette loaded the bases with two outs, but Roberto Perez grounded out to end the threat.

Lake County is in its first season in the Midwest League. The Captains moved from the South Atlantic League.

Clinton is also seekings its first Midwest League title. The Lumberkings, a Seattle Mariners farm club, will open the series with right-hander Yoervis Medina on the mound. He went 5-0 with a 2.50 ERA in six regular-season starts for Clinton and is 1-0 in the playoffs.
