Cards Winter Warm-Up Audio: Sunday, 1/20/13
Following are selected interviews held during day two of the St. Louis Cardinals Winter Warm-Up at the Hyatt Regency at the Arch on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Associated photos are posted at The Cardinal Nation blog. Also catch Saturday's day one interviews and photos. Joe Kelly Kelly sees himself as the most competitive player on the roster. He had a special place in his heart for Kyle Lohse, who took Kelly under his wing. Kelly wants to master Lohse's skill of mixing up his favorite pitch, his changeup, with his curve and slider before he loses his fastball velocity. (16:08) Shelby Miller In a very candid interview, the organization's top pitching prospect admits he tried to develop a "beach body" last offseason, coming into camp at just 204 pounds. This winter, Miller has a contest with Wainwright to make their respective weight targets. Miller is now at 223 with a goal to come to camp stronger. He also discussed how he shared his positives and negatives after each Triple-A start with Adam Wainwright last season as he worked to right his game. (10:59) Allen Craig The first baseman seems relaxed and confident, well aware that 2013 will be his first season as a major leaguer in which he comes into camp healthy and assured of playing everyday. Not surprisingly, Craig likes hitting cleanup. (8:22) Jon Jay The centerfielder is clearly ready for the season to come, but says his only focus is staying healthy and helping his team win. (8:05) Jordan Swagerty The right-hander, who missed all of 2012 after Tommy John surgery, was checked out by the Cardinals medical staff prior to meeting with us on Sunday morning. He has thrown two 60-pitch. (3:54) Pete Kozma Kozma says he has high expectations coming into the season to play second, short or wherever needed. He noted his success came after he had one good game and it took off from there. He takes special pride driving in runners. (7:44) Edward Mujica When the right-hander was brought to St. Louis, his confidence was set when Mike Matheny told him to be ready to pitch in the sixth and seventh innings. Mujica is very pleased his former teammate, lefty Randy Choate, has been signed by the Cardinals. (4:16) Tony La Russa The former manager shared his reminiscences of Stan Musial, noting that he and Red Schoendienst together made "the greatest room of all time." (6:51) Trevor Rosenthal The hard-throwing right-hander seems to be on top of the world, despite missing MLB orientation due to the flu. Working out daily at Busch Stadium with Chris Carpenter, almost like a 9-to-5 job, he says, means he will be ready for the season. Teammate Jake Westbrook is letting Rosenthal and his wife live in his St. Louis house over the winter. (5:41) Seth Maness The Springfield starter and organization's minor league Pitcher of the Year had just returned from the Caravan, but really had no idea what was awaiting him in St. Louis and the Winter Warm-Up. Maness considers himself a Greg Maddux-type of pitcher, using smoke and mirrors. (4:52) Bill DeWitt Jr. The principal owner shared his many years of reminiscences of Stan Musial, focusing on his benevolence. "We're not the same Cardinals without Stan," said DeWitt. Looking ahead, the owner acknowledged a potential depth problem in the middle infield and noted the team could spend money. Further, he said there will be a payroll increase in the next two years. (21:34) Jake Westbrook Unlike several other players, the right-hander found "peace of mind" by coming to terms with the Cardinals on a two-year extension before last season ended. Westbrook is fine if he is considered the forgotten man of the rotation. He is speaking to Kyle Lohse regularly and is surprised his ex-teammate is still unsigned. (6:16) Mitchell Boggs We saw a very confident, but not cocky Boggs. He said he expects to be great and follow up on his 2012. Boggs asked Mike Matheny before committing to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic and received enthusiastic support.
