Garcia Takes Over for Marmol with Palm Beach
It was relatively easy for the St. Louis Cardinals to replace injured Oliver Marmol on the active roster of the A-Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals. They simply called on second baseman Jose Garcia, one of their 77 players working out in the same Jupiter, Florida complex as part of Extended Spring Training. Garcia, a 21-year-old Venezuelan, is beginning his fourth season in the Cardinals organization after signing as a non-drafted free agent in March, 2006. His first season was spent in the Venezuelan Summer League where his .973 fielding percentage topped all VSL second basemen. In 2008, Garcia was a leader of the New York-Penn League champion Batavia Muckdogs for whom he stole 28 bases, second-most in the short-season circuit. The right-handed hitter also scored 48 runs, which was the fourth highest total in the league. He made his first Florida State League appearance on Monday night as the designated hitter, striking out in his only plate appearance after having earlier entered the game as a pinch runner during Palm Beach's 4-3 win over Jupiter. Garcia's 2008 Batavia teammate Colt Sedbrook made the start at second base. Garcia's career line coming into the season was .234/.311/.302 in 785 at-bats over 235 professional games. The 22-year-old Marmol has been placed on the 7-day disabled list of the Palm Beach club. The second baseman has yet to appear in a game for the 2009 Cardinals. The right-handed hitter came into 2009 as a career .198 hitter in two seasons as a professional since having been drafted in the sixth round in 2007 from the College of Charleston.
