Reyes & Laffey Leave With Injuries

Anthony Reyes pitches against the Reds.

The bad news keeps mounting for the Indians. Pitchers Anthony Reyes and Aaron Laffey both left a 3-1 loss at Cincinnati on Friday night with injuries. Reyes has a sore right elbow. Laffey left with sharp pain in his right side -- possibly a strained oblique. The injuries put even more stress on an overworked and underachieving pitching staff that once again will likely turn to the minors for help.

Reyes walked a career-high six and hit another batter in only three innings. Manager Eric Wedge said the right-hander had difficultly feeling the baseball come out of his hands because of his sore elbow and that probably led to the wildness.

Reyes had been moved back one day in the rotation because of his tender elbow.

Reyes (6.47 ERA) also allowed one hit and struck out only one, but somehow gave up only one run before leaving being replaced by Jensen Lewis. Reyes threw only 23 of his 59 pitches for strikes.

Lewis (3.91 ERA) worked three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out three.

Laffey (3-1, 3.93 ERA) got the loss. The lefty worked a scoreless seventh, then allowed two runs in the eighth, leaving after grabbing his side after making a pitch.

"On the pitch before, I kind of had a cramp," Laffey said. "On the next pitch, there was a sharp pain. After that happens, you don't want to push it."

Grady Sizemore went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, his team-leading eighth. That shot down the right-field line put Cleveland ahead in the first inning against Bronson Arroyo.

The Indians announced changes for two upcoming games. The interleague game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, June 14, has been added by ESPN to "Sunday Night Baseball", so the game time has been changed from 1:05 p.m. to 8:09 p.m. Also, the game against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, July 4, has been dropped from FOX's broadcast slate and is now a 7:05 p.m. game on SportsTime Ohio, rather than a 4:05 p.m. game. An Independence Day fireworks show will follow the game.
